Williston — Williams County
Williston is the principal western North Dakota city, with a population of approximately 30,000. The city sits in Williams County in northwestern ND on US-2 / US-85 / Highway 200. Williston is the hub of the Bakken oil play and was the historical "boomtown" of the 2010s shale boom that transformed northwestern ND.
The Bakken Oil Play
The Bakken Formation is a major oil-producing geological formation centered on the Williston Basin in northwestern North Dakota and northeastern Montana. The Bakken extends across:
- Williams County (Williston).
- McKenzie County (Watford City).
- Mountrail County.
- Dunn County.
- Ward County (Minot).
- Eastern Montana (Richland, Roosevelt counties).
The Bakken Oil-Boom Social Transformation (2008-2015)
From roughly 2008 to 2015, the Williston Basin transformed from a depopulating prairie to one of the highest-paying labor markets in the country. The boom brought:
- Transient, predominantly male, predominantly out-of-state workforce.
- Man-camps, housing crises, sexual-assault and trafficking spikes.
- Permanent reorientation of Williston, Watford City, and Dickinson around oil-economy logistics.
- Unprecedented drug-testing-program investment by oil-and-gas employers.
Pure Dakota Health Williston
Pure Dakota Health Williston at 120 26th St E, Suite 500 is the licensed dispensary serving the western ND oil-patch region. Operated by Pure Dakota Health (vertically integrated with Bismarck cultivation/manufacturing). However, foot traffic is suppressed by:
- Cross-border Sidney/Glendive Montana competition (legal-rec since January 2022).
- Oil-industry drug-testing rigor discouraging cannabis use.
- Williams County medical-cannabis patient counts lag eastern population centers.
Bakken Oil-and-Gas Drug-Testing Intensity
Major Bakken operators require pre-employment, post-incident, and random drug testing under DOT-equivalent or stricter protocols:
- ConocoPhillips.
- Continental Resources.
- Hess Corporation.
- Marathon Oil (MRO).
- Halliburton.
- Schlumberger (SLB).
- Liberty Oilfield Services.
Frequency: pre-employment + random + post-incident + reasonable-suspicion + return-to-duty. THC metabolites detection windows: 30+ days for chronic users; weeks for occasional users. Federal Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse follows CDL drivers across employers. See Bakken oil patch page.
The Watford City Drive
Watford City (McKenzie County) is the other Bakken hub. Patient driving distance to Pure Dakota Health Williston: ~50 miles. Without home cultivation (stripped by 2017 SB 2344), Watford City patients face 100+ mile round-trip drives for medical-cannabis access. See geographic access page.
Cross-Border Sidney/Glendive Montana
Williston is approximately 60 miles from Sidney, MT via Highway 200 / Highway 2. Sidney has multiple state-licensed adult-use dispensaries (Sacred Sun Farms, Seed of Life Labs). Glendive (~140 miles southwest) has additional retail. Bakken-area worker cross-border traffic to Sidney/Glendive MT has been substantial since Montana’s January 2022 retail launch. See Montana Bakken page.
